Aricent VLAN (Virtual LAN) is a complete implementation of Port-based, Port-and-Protocol-based, and MAC-based VLAN software for switched LAN environments. The software is portable to different operating systems and switch hardware using well-defined external interfaces. It can be easily integrated with the Aricent RSTP/MSTP for Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol/Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol support.

• Supports different types of tagged VLANs: Shared, Independent, and Hybrid VLANs, as per IEEE 802.1Q.
• Supports Port-based, MAC-based, and Port-and-Protocol-based VLAN configuration on per port basis.
• Supports 802.1q Tunneling/1q in 1q/VLAN Stacking, thus expanding the VLAN space in the service provider networks.
• Supports Inter VLAN Routing

• Supports Ingress and Egress rules that define how to handle incoming and outgoing frames.

• Supports Extended filtering services using GMRP (GARP Multicast Registration Protocol).
• Supports Expedited traffic forwarding, using service classes of multiple levels of priorities.
• Provides interfaces to Spanning Tree (RSTP and MSTP) software.
• Provides support for easy configuration of VLANs by the Network Administrator using SNMP and CLI.
• Exploits the VLAN features, if available in the hardware, for learning and forwarding of VLAN tagged frames.
• Conforms to Future Software Architecture for Portability (FSAP2), thus ensuring highly portable code, which uses flexible buffer and timer management libraries.
