Aricent VRRP Overview :

Aricent VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) software is a portable implementation of the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol, as specified in the IETF RFC draft standard. It specifies an election mechanism that dynamically assigns responsibility for a virtual router to any one of the VRRP routers on a LAN. It eliminates the single point of failure inherent in the static default routed environments.

Aricent VRRP Features :

  • Implements full-fledged router redundancy functionality.
  • Fully compatible with Aricent IP/RIP, and Aricent SNMP Agent products for providing router redundancy.
  • Provides support for draft standard MIB with optional extensions to dynamically enable/disable the Aricent VRRP functionality in routers or Layer 3 switches.
  • Provides for operation over Ethernet type of networks.
  • Provides portable buffer management and timer management libraries.

The figure above illustrates the functionality of the router redundancy. For e.g., if the Virtual Router (VR1) goes down, then VR2 takes the responsibility of VR1 in forwarding the IP packets.

Aricent VRRP Benefits:

Aricent VRRP conforms to the Future Software Architecture for Portability (FSAP) rules that separate Buffer Management, Timer Management and Scheduling from the core protocol functions. It is easily ported to various architectures and reduces the time to market for OEMs and VARs who wish to incorporate router redundancy functionality in their products.
